Interview with Doug Stokes and Chris Tait from the Nipper

the nipper logothe nipperThe Nipper is a seriously small portable phone charger. It is small enough for you to carry it around wherever you go, doesn’t depend on you remembering to charge it, and it relies on something readily available everywhere: household AA batteries. The Nipper is made by Doug Stokes and Chris Tait who’ve partnered up to found “Design on impulse”.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you and what do you do?

We are Doug Stokes and Chris Tait from Design on Impulse, and we’ve created the Nipper – The World’s Smallest Phone Charger.

What does a typical day in your life look like?

Get up, go out, have fun, then just at the wrong time run out of phone battery! Put our thinking caps on and design a product to fix this devastating problem…
Cup of milk and then bed.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you

We sleep with Nippers under our pillows. They fend off the ghosts of dead batteries.Premium-Nippers black and white

How did you come up with the idea for your product and what made you “go for it”

We were staring dejectedly at our dead phones, thinking why don’t we have our portable phone chargers with us. We decided it was because they were too big, too bulky, and too ugly to carry with us all the time.
We need a phone charger which is small, neat and can be carried at all times without remembering to charge it.
So we came up with the Nipper, it’s so tiny, it’s like having a sugar cube in your pocket.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made with your product (financial, emotional, educational) that led to the product we’re experiencing today?

We decided to use magnets to attach AA batteries to the Nipper. These are what make it such a pleasure to use, everyone loves the snap as magnets stick to things.

Where do you see your company or your company’s focus in 1-2 years?

Exploring all the ways you can have fun while charging your phone.

If you could time travel back to day one of your startup and have 15min with your former self to communicate any lessons you’ve acquired with the intention of saving yourself mistakes and heartache, what would you tell yourself?

Go for more walks, you know how much you love them.

Wreck-it-Ralph for his inspiring philosophies of life.

Any tips for aspiring entrepreneurs on how to facilitate a successful financing campaign?

What do you see as the biggest advancement in your technology sector over the next 5-10 years?

Hydrogen fuel cells will be AWESOME!

What do you see as the biggest risk in your technology sector over the next 5-10 years?

Hydrogen fuel cells will be so awesome that they’ll put all other types of batteries out of business. So no more need for the Nipper 🙁

Thank you for your time, Doug and Chris!
