I am Stefan Ponsold and I started the company SunnyBAG. The SunnyBAG Smart Battery is the world’s smartest power bank. Why is it special? It makes energy visible for the first time ever.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you and what do you do?
I started the company SunnyBAG with a clear vision. To charge mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, etc. on the go environmentally friendly. Today more than 30.000 customers from Alaska to Australia trust in our products.

What does a typical day in your life look like?
06:00 – Getting up and making coffee for my girlfriend 😉
06:40 – Physical activities (running, swimming or gym)
08:00 – Coming with a good mood into our office and solve hundreds of problems lots of mails, etc.
12:00 – Having lunch – weekly vegetarian
17:30 – Finishing work satisfied 🙂
18:00 – Cool down with my girlfriend, sometimes doing exercises as well
Tell us something that most people don’t know about you
I haven’t studied electrical engineering. Basically, I did my Ingeneur in wood engineering. In my 20’s, I decided to do a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Innovation Management.
How did you come up with the idea for your product and what made you “go for it?”
With the SmartBattery, we wanted to show the invisible. Before, a solar system was always a black-box. Now, they get excited when they see how much energy the panel really is generating. That was our basic idea – to make it exciting.
What made you decide to go with crowdfunding (or venture capital)?
Best way to prove your concept is doing crowdfunding. You also get a lot of interning feedback from your supporters and you’ll have the money to start production.
What is the best decision you’ve ever made with your product (financial, emotional, educational) that led to the product we’re experiencing today?
The modular system is the best solution we did. Even if you have a 4 year old SunnyBAG – it is compatible with the new SmartBattery 🙂
Where do you see your company or your company’s focus in 1-2 years?
Building a community, a “generation green” as we call it.
If you could time travel back to day one of your startup and have 15min with your former self to communicate any lessons you’ve acquired with the intention of saving yourself mistakes and heartache, what would you tell yourself?
Stay longer in Silicon Valley (I was there just for 2 months).

Who has been the biggest influence on your life and work and why?
Lots of people I’m looking up to. My dad, some friends who inspired me, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, etc.
Any tips for aspiring entrepreneurs on how to facilitate a successful financing campaign?
Most work has to be done before the campaign starts.
What do you see as the biggest advancement in your technology sector over the next 5-10 years?
Nano technology in capacitors. These small “super caps” could store a lot of energy and will be fully charged in one second.
