Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Joel Young, the founder of Doc Artisan since 2011. I design accessories for smart devices. My motto is work smart, play hard, and love more!
I was a surf bum for 3 years after high school and loved it…then i went to college and got a degree.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
Emails, follow-up calls, shipping department, design work, inspiration/motivation time, lunch with wifey, dink around the house, back to computer, hit golf balls or something active, rinse and repeat next day…or something like that 🙂

Proud to call my favorite MMA fighter TJ Dillashaw who lives in same town as me -Angles Camp, CA. Also, I was a surf bum for 3 years after high school and loved it…then i went to college and got a degree.
How did you come up with the idea for your product and what made you “go for it”
It was just an evolution that came from our previous design, the detachable magnetic wallet case for iPhone. I went for it after customers kept asking me about it. I didn’t know that it would be as popular as it has become.
What made you decide to go with crowdfunding (or venture capital)?
I am all about the concept of crowdfunding for the simple feedback that is generated before, during, and after the project is funded. Companies don’t have to pay for feedback when they use crowdfunding because the supporters do it freely and with joy – good or bad
What is the best decision you’ve ever made with your product (financial, emotional, educational) that led to the product we’re experiencing today?
To keep innovating and making a good product great!
Where do you see your company or your company’s focus in 1-2 years?
Same as now, making new cool stuff and growing our network of great customers
If you could time travel back to day one of your startup and have 15min with your former self to communicate any lessons you’ve acquired with the intention of saving yourself mistakes and heartache, what would you tell yourself?
Have no fear, mistakes are ok, take time off to spend with family and friends, treat it like a long distance run versus a sprint

Do your $%&ing research! make sure there is a market and customers for what you are trying to sell. WHO are the competitors and what makes you different!?
What do you see as the biggest advancement in your technology sector over the next 5-10 years?
Smart devices are growing at an alarming rate – everything is changing so fast and we all are just trying to keep up. The best companies will stay ahead of the game and make fun-functional products that make them smile
What do you see as the biggest risk in your technology sector over the next 5-10 years?
Big companies not innovating and just copying each other – that is a no win situation
