It’s 2015!! What are we in for?
As a new year is here, it’s always exciting to think of what new technology we’ll get to experience in the next 12 months. With Apple and other big tech companies releasing great new products regularly, international start-ups developing smart solutions to old problems, and crowd funded projects up for the support of the masses, there’s always something new on the horizon.
Of course, 12 months is a long time in the world of technology. It may not even be possible to know about the things we’ll be using, say, in November of next year. However, there is a lot of great technology that we know we can look forward to. Here are eight of the most exciting gadgets and devices due to launch in 2015.
1. The Apple Watch
After a much-anticipated announcement this past fall, Apple fans and tech heads have been waiting to get their hands on the Apple Watch. Due for a spring 2015 release, this has the potential to be the Cadillac of all wearables: a sleek, highly functional mobile device that has messaging, navigation, tracking, and more. And, if you’ve ever wanted to emulate Dick Tracy in real life, you’ll get your chance very soon.
2. The iPad Pro
We’ll stop with the Apple products after this one, but improvements on the already awesome iPad are always exciting. Here’s what we know about this new iteration: its size is a much improved 12 inches, its processor is a rocket fast A8X, and rumour has it that it will be available before the end of 2015.
Photo enthusiasts and gadget fans have been anticipating the release of the Panono camera. A grapefruit-sized, lens-covered ball that can shoot 360-degree panoramic images, the device is app-controlled and can store up to 400 images in its memory. A true crowdfunding success story (the project raised in excess of $1 million USD!), the Panono will ship to initial backers in the spring and become available to the general public shortly thereafter.
Digital photos are great, but what about printing them? Snapjet is a Polaroid film printer that can one-off any image from your smartphone. It’s compatible with just about any mobile device, it prints high quality photos on Polariod film, and it’s totally portable. Another crowdfunding winner, the Snapjet is in its final stages of development and should be available next fall.
5. A Samsung Phone With A Bendable Screen
Mobile phones have become increasingly thin, but they’re still firm and easily breakable. Samsung, however, seems to have a solution: a phone that’s made of a thin, flexible plastic substrate. Called the YOUM display, it made its first appearance in 2013 at trade shows. However, industry analysts speculate that it will be on phones available to the general public later this year.
6. The Oculus Rift
Virtual reality headsets have been around for a while, but a high quality, fully immersive VR device for consumers may be available later this year. The Oculus Rift has caused quite a buzz at trade shows in the past year or so, and development kits have been available for about that long. Before 2015 is up, consumers should able to get their hands on an Oculus Rift and have some great content for it.
7. 4K TVs
2015 should be the year that ultra high definition TVs, or 4K TVs, become widely available. With an unprecedented resolution of 3840×2160, 4K TVs offer an incredibly crisp picture. And, with 4K content becoming more common, 2015 may be the year that consumers take the plunge and upgrade their screen.
8. Google Glass
OK, so Google Glass has been out for a few years, but aside from one or two special days, it’s been available only as an open beta for those deemed suitable by Google. In 2015, the latest version of Glass should be released to the general public.
