The all day activity tracking and all night sleep tracking you get from the Fitbit Charge HR are excellent, but it’s the little things that add up to make this wristband our favourite tracker out there. The HR in the name means heart rate — as in, it’s got continuous heart rate tracking, which opens the door to zone training and all sorts of helpful workout data.

Other useful features include a five day battery life, smartphone sync with caller ID, a silent alarm, a seven day memory, and your daily stats right on the display. And while there’s no onboard GPS, it can work with your smartphone’s GPS for totally accurate distance details. The Fitbit app is fantastic as well.

The Fitbit Charge HR is comfortable to wear all day, stays on securely thanks to its watchband clasp, and comes in four colours. It’s splash proof and highly durable as well. And, at a very reasonable £119.99, it’s affordable too. If you’re looking for a fitness tracker that does more than the budget models but doesn’t have a bunch of features you’ll never use, we can’t recommend a better model than the Fitbit Charge HR.

What you get for your money is impressive. With its three-axis accelerometer, the Flash tracks calories burned, distance travelled, and more, no matter what activity you’re doing. And when night falls, the Flash will record how long and how well you sleep.

In addition to a great price, the Flash’s strong suit is its looks. The clean design has LEDs around the circumference that light up on demand to denote progress toward your daily goal. The device itself is a coin-sized circle that can be worn on the wrist or around your neck, clipped on your clothes, or slipped in your pocket.

The Misfit app is where you’ll see all of your details and be able to compete with your friends who use Misfit devices. More than this, though, the Misfit Link app allows you to assign actions for total customization of your Flash.

3. Withings Activité Pop

It may look like an ordinary wristwatch, but the Withings Activité Pop is a full-on fitness tracker. Its £119.95 retail price is good for all it does. It keeps tabs on your running, walking, and swimming (it’s waterproof to 50 metres), tracks sleep data, and shows you how close you are to your daily goal with just a tap of the face.

When synced with the Withings Health Mate App, you can check out all of your stats, set goals, and compete with your Withings-using contacts. You can manually enter your weight, blood pressure, and heart rate for more accurate feedback. The wristband syncs with popular fitness apps like RunKeeper and MyFitness Pal too.

There’s no onboard GPS or heart rate monitor, but on the plus side, the battery is an ordinary button cell that lasts eight whole months and is easy to replace. And with its inconspicuous, watch-like appearance, you’ll never have to worry about it not matching your business attire.

We like the Activité Pop so much because it combines all of the features of a fitness tracker without the rubbery materials of most wristbands. And, because you never have to charge the battery, it’s always ready to go.

Let’s start with the similarities: the Vivofit 2 tracks all of your walking or running details like distance travelled, steps taken, calories burned, and so on, plus it has automatic sleep tracking.

This device also discourages you from being sedentary with move bar alerts, and to keep your challenged, it automatically increases your daily goal if you’re meeting it regularly. The Vivofit 2’s battery life is a full year, it’s waterproof to 50 metres, and it automatically syncs to Garmin Connect, which is available on mobile and on the web.

What the Vivofit 2 offers that its older brother does not is a more secure clasp, a better selection of colours, a backlight on the display for better readability in low light, and a move beeper, an activity timer. These added features are really nice, though there’s no new big selling points like a GPS or heart rate tracker.

Jawbone-UP3Making our list at the halfway point is the newest addition to Jawbone’s UP line, the UP3 fitness band. It’s got everything you’ve come to expect from Jawbone: full activity tracking, all sorts of sleep data, slim design, and lots of compatibility.

What’s new on the UP3 is the addition of bioimpedance sensors to measure resting heart rate tracking. This allows for all sorts of zone training and more detailed workout information. And, its smart coaching feature learns your activity patterns and preferences to keep you motivated and keep you fit.

The Jawbone app is fantastic tool, allowing you to see your data in clean graphics, log food, motivate and compete with your UP using contacts, and more. This is important, as the UP3 has no actual display. However, it’s the UP3’s compatibility with so many third party apps and devices that make it a true standout.

The UP3 is priced at £129.99, which could be considered somewhat expensive given that there’s no onboard GPS. However, this fitness band does offer wireless syncing, a seven day battery, an idle alert, a smart alarm, and lots of other worthwhile attributes. Sure, the clasp isn’t the greatest, but still, the UP3 is well worth your attention.

The Surge is an exceptionally well-appointed fitness and health tracker and is perfect for more serious runners and for wearing all day. Its big selling point is the onboard GPS, a must-have feature if you’re training for a race. Additionally, it’s got a heart rate monitor for full workout details and zone training.

But there’s more that makes the Surge so great. The black and white display is crisp, clear, and functional, showing you relevant workout data, call and text notifications from a synced smartphone, and more. You can even use the Surge to control the music you’re listening to.

The big downside is the price. At £199.99, it’s one of the most expensive trackers on our list, though that amount is comparable to other GPS-enabled fitness bands. Ultimately, if GPS is a feature you want, you’ll have to fork over some more dough.

Microsoft-BandIt looks great. It tracks everything. It’s got a full colour touch screen and can sync with just about every phone. Coming in at number seven is this fitness tracker and smartwatch hybrid from one of the biggest names in the tech game. Currently listed at £169.99, the Microsoft Band is priced somewhat higher than most other fitness wristbands. However, this is because it offers more.

Yes, it tracks activity and sleep, but it does so with an onboard GPS, three-axis accelerometer, gyrometer, and sensors for both skin temperature and skin response. It’s great for running, cycling, and pretty much any activity that doesn’t involve water. (It is splash resistant, though.) And, the Microsoft Band is hugely compatible with lots of third party apps.

Then there’s how it looks. More than a flimsy piece of silicone, the Microsoft Band is a thermal plastic health band with a full colour touch screen. This looks like an advanced device — and it is.

Throw in smart notifications, social network syncing, and a relationship (yes, relationship) with Cortana, aka Microsoft’s personal assistant, to keep your calendar and remind you of what you need to do, and you’ve got a winner.

MOOV-NOWIf Spiderman wore a fitness tracker, it would probably be the MOOV NOW. This just-released update on the highly regarded MOOV is lighter and more breathable than its predecessor, with a webbed look and lots of curves. It’s not a fitness tracker, the developers of Moov insist — it’s a personal fitness coach! It’s definitely interesting looking, but the best part is under the hood.

MOOV NOW is able to detect precise motion, allowing it to track just about any activity, including swimming. It syncs with your smartphone for real time audio coaching and feedback, encouraging you during challenging parts, giving you advice to improve your form, and letting you know how you’re progressing. And yes, it tracks sleep, too.

It does all of this thanks to its accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer working on nine axes. (There’s no heart rate monitoring or GPS, though.) Recharging isn’t necessary, thanks to its six month battery (just change the button cell when needed). The corresponding app is thorough, with lots of data about your workouts. Plus, the MOOV NOW comes in a few colours.

Oh, but you need to have some serious cash to drop, because at £389.99, this health band is not cheap.

The 920XT measures everything about your run or your swim; with compatible sensors, it can track your cycling as well. This isn’t just distance travelled or steps taken — this is cadence and contact time, stroke identification and count, drill logging and recovery advising.

There is a colour display offering lots of information, and the 920XT automatically syncs with Garmin Connect for full details, live tracking, and a social component. Sync it with your smartphone for call, text, and email notifications.

The battery life is unimpressive, at somewhere between one and two days, depending on GPS usage, though that’s standard for smartwatches of this calibre. Still, it’s got a heart rate monitor, a stunning array of performance features, and all day tracking capabilities. Maybe you’re just looking for a tracker to keep you motivated and give you an idea of how much you’re moving, and maybe you don’t want to spend a whole lot to get that information. In that case, you’ll want to check out the fitness bracelet that grabs the ten spot on our list: the Fitbit Flex.

The Flex uses an accelerometer to track the standard metrics: steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned, and active minutes. Once you’re asleep, the Flex will record your sleep stats, like quality and total time asleep.

Sync it with your smartphone, and the Flex will automatically transfer your stats to the corresponding app. You can also round out your profile with personal details, set goals, and get a total picture of your activity. The Flex is compatible with lots of third party apps as well.

There’s no true display, just some LEDs that show you how much you’ve progressed toward your daily goal. It’s a simple, attractive fitness bracelet, and while the £79.99 price is more than some other trackers that do more, you may not want more. How We Test

It’s not an exact science, but we wore each tracker for a minimum of 48 hours. We were very mindful that many users of these devices might not have a lot of confidence in their ability to use wearable technology, so ease of use was important.

We also wore more than one at the same time to check for inter-tracker accuracy. Finally, we cross checked our findings with what other tech professionals had to say, and we made sure it looked good with what we were wearing on Friday night.

We walked, we jogged, we swam if we could, we checked out the apps, and we slept. Then, we looked at our numbers, we recharged, we price-checked, and we assessed using the categories below.


Our Fitness Tracker Testing Parameters

  1. Activity tracking: We’re referring to a tracker’s ability to measure steps taken, distance travelled, and calories burned. A bit of a given for devices like this, but just so you’re aware.
  2. Sleep tracking: Also a given for most fitness trackers, sleep tracking refers to things time asleep, restlessness, and sleep quality.
  3. Display: Many wearers like to see some sort of readout on their wrist as they go about the day, while others dislike the distraction. For our purposes, display refers to an actual numerical readout (either digital or analog-appearing). Some trackers have LED lights for communication, but we didn’t consider those to be displays.
  4. Colour display: Nothing says progress like a tiny TV screen on your wrist. If you want to see full colour when you look at your tracker, these devices have it.
  5. Elevation: A useful metric for individuals who are engaged in more serious athletic training, elevation is not only a helpful bit of data to know, but it can help your tracker better calculate calories burned.
  6. Waterproof: Most trackers are splashproof and sweatproof, but our rough cutoff question is: if you forget to take it off in the shower, will it still be OK?
  7. Swim tracking: The majority of all-purpose fitness trackers can’t keep tabs on water activity, but some can. A few will even keep count of laps, and even fewer will recognise strokes. A check in this box means you’ll get some sort of metric recording in the pool.
  8. Onboard GPS: A built in GPS sensor chip is so helpful for accurately measuring distance, following training plans, and finding your way back home. The trade-off is that it brings up the price of any tracker significantly
  9. Heart rate monitoring: For zone and interval training, along with just general heart health information, heart rate monitoring is essential. It’s more and more standard on trackers, but the more budget-minded models tend to not have it.
  10. Smart notifications: If you want to use your tracker as an extension of your smartphone, notifications about texts, calls, emails, and more are extremely helpful.
  11. Silent alarm: A kinder, gentler way to wake up in the morning, and a feature on many fitness and sleep trackers, the silent alarm is especially nice if you wake up earlier than your partner.
  12. Food and health tracking on app: The tracking features are great, but many wearers want full health integration: calories in vs. calories burned, weight monitoring, heart rate data, and so on.
  13. 5+ day battery: If your tracker’s battery is dead, do those steps count? If you prefer to charge once a week or less, this is an important detail to consider.
  14. Looks good for all day wear: Yes, this is totally subjective. What we’re looking at is how well the trackers blend in with ordinary clothing. Anything that overtly looks like a sports watch did not make the cut.
  15. Under £100: £100 seems to be a round and common (if not arbitrary) cutoff for how much people are willing to spend on a gadget.
  16. Under £50: If you’re really trying to keep to a budget but still want a tracker, you’ll be happy to know that you can snag one for under the £50 mark.

It’s no surprise that this one made the list, as it’s made by a company known primarily for its navigation products. The QuickGPSFix technology it offers does not disappoint.

Serious runners and joggers need more than just step counting — they need accurate distance information, heart rate data, and real time feedback as they race to crush their previous personal bests. The TomTom Runner Cardio does all of these things and then some for its moderate £169.99 price tag.

The built in heart rate monitor allows for zone and interval training, and TomTom’s patented QuickGPSFix technology keeps track of your precise location so you know exactly how far you’ve gone and exactly how far you have to go. The Runner Cardio measures pace, speed, distance travelled, and calories burned. Plus, there’s a large 22x25mm display that shows you real time information, and it’s easy to navigate through the menus with one-button control.

The Runner Cardio looks sporty, but it’s fairly low profile and lightweight at just 63g. It’s also good for indoor running and jogging, though some syncing is necessary for accuracy. Battery life is modest, at just eight to ten hours, but that’s standard for devices with power-burning GPS sensor chips. Use the corresponding TomTom MySports app to give you a complete picture of your training so you can run your best time at your next race.

There are lots of fitness trackers that are waterproof, and there are a handful that can count laps, but ultimately, those aren’t dedicated fitness trackers for swimming.

Garmin Swim

The Garmin Swim, however, is a tracker with one function: to help you improve your performance in the pool. With its list price of £129.99, it will probably appeal to serious swimmers only, but it will suit their needs quite well.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Garmin Swim is that it can actually detect what stroke you’re swimming. It’s a helpful detail for later analysis of your workout. In addition to that, the Swim can also track your time, distance, lap segment time, and pace, and it can tell you your SWOLF score, or your overall swimming efficiency. It can also do interval training, drills, and timed sets. All you do is tell it the size of the pool you’re in, and it takes care of everything else.

Paired with the Garmin HRM swim heart rate monitor chest strap, which is designed especially for use in the pool, the Garmin Swim can show you just how well you’re progressing in your training. It doesn’t sync automatically with the corresponding Garmin Connect app, unfortunately (you need to tell it to sync, but at least it does so wirelessly), and it won’t be able to measure much if you’re swimming in a natural body of water. This tracker isn’t even available for purchase yet (though can pre-order one), but it’s already making big waves in the press. The biggest appeal of the Atlas Wristband is that it can identify any activity you’re doing and then analyse it thoroughly. No need to tell your Atlas that you’re doing butterfly curls — it knows, it’s counting your reps, and its determining if your form is ideal.

Atlas is small, but it’s powerful. The display gives you real-time information on your current activity. The built in heart rate monitor allows the Atlas to keep tabs on how many calories you’re burning as you exercise. Plus, thanks to its three-axis motion tracking, it can give you a form score on just about any activity to help you improve. It’s an odd-looking asymmetrical device — the Atlas is no Apple Watch. However, what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in incredible functionality.

The corresponding app has smart coaching plus full details of every gym workout. Atlas is currently available for pre-order for $249 USD (about £160), and the company expects it to ship later this year. For weight loss you’ll probably be looking for a fitness tracker that will keep you moving, give you full stats, stay on top of how many calories you’re burning, and pair with a choice of fitness apps.
